Sun, 11 Mar 2007 14:39:50 U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates reportedly wanted to allot only 20 minutes to his meeting this week with Israeli war minister Amir Peretz.
According to the online edition of the Israeli daily Haaretz, the use of a simultaneous translator, as requested by Peretz, would have effectively halved the conversation time to 10 minutes.
Pentagon officials agreed to extend the duration of the meeting only after Israeli officials explained that such briefness constituted a slap in Peretz's face.
A spokesman for Peretz told Haaretz that the session would last 45 minutes, which he called a "respectable length of time."
Officials at the Zionist regime's embassy in Washington, D.C., meanwhile, said the Gates-Peretz meeting was scheduled to last 30 minutes. In response to a formal request for information, the Pentagon said Gates would announce the scheduled duration the day before the meeting, which is set for Tuesday.
Sources in Washington say Gates initially sought only a short meeting with Peretz because he did not have any matters that required extended discussion.
