MOSCOW -- Russian news agencies, citing the Kremlin, said former President Boris Yeltsin has died.
A Kremlin spokesman has confirmed to The Associated Press that the 76-year-old Yeltsin has died, but gave no cause of death or further information.
Yeltsin engineered the final collapse of the Soviet Union and pushed Russia to embrace democracy and a market economy.
Yeltsin was the first president of the Russian Federation from 1991-99, following the break-up of the Soviet Union.
