Palestinian "human shield" forces Israel to scrap air strike

Mideast

Hundreds of Palestinians barricaded themselves on the roof and inside a militant's house in Gaza, forcing the Israeli army to call off a planned air strike. The family of the member of the Popular Resistance Committees had been told to evacuate their home in the refugee camp of Jebalya before it was bombed. But instead hundreds of neighbours gathered at the site.

Israel accused the militants of using people as human shields but has been under pressure to avoid killing civilians since the deaths of 19 people in Beit Hanoun earlier this month. The military has stepped up attacks in Gaza after a woman was killed by a Palestinian rocket in the Israeli town of Sderot on Wednesday. Three people were wounded - one seriously - in a similar attack today. Medical sources say one rocket landed in the centre of the southern border town.
