Nancy Pelosi is EVIL!

No, she's not. But to judge from a recent diary that's been posted, you'd think she was Satan's personal love slave, #1 concubine to Corporate America and all that.

Ahem.

Some folk with an actual knowledge of Nancy Pelosi (see also here), and of how Congressional events are set up and scheduled, have tried to stem the Lord of the Flies-like hate frenzy with fact injections (such as here and here), but the problem is that the left in this country has been so tainted with an unthinkingly reflexive, corrosive cynicism that even the weakest imputations of corruption, Money Party membership and corporate whoredom are automatically believed by a non-trivial portion of Americans.

DemHillStaffer gives us some facts:

1. This isn't an orientation session for Freshmen - its part of an ongoing series of caucus meetings for all Members of Congress with leading thinkers on issues. For example, there's also one this week with military leaders on Iraq.

2. Labor wasn't banned from this session. It's for Members of Congress only and a special guest. To be banned implies that its open to people other than members of Congress. According to that logic, everyone who's not Bob Rubin is "banned." A better title would be "Pelosi Invites Rubin, not Labor, to Discuss Fiscal Responsibility."

3. Whatever you think of his trade policy, Rubin knows how to make the case for fiscal responsibility, which is the subject of his talk.

4. Labor has a friend in Nancy Pelosi, whose top lieutenant - George Miller, the author of the Employee Free Choice Act - is going to chair the Education and Labor Committee.

5. Why are we assuming the worst about Democratic leaders before she's even said one word opposing a pro-working family agenda?

And Deaniac83 chimes in:

Do I have to remind everyone here that it was Nancy Pelosi who ably lead the tooth-and-nail fight against CAFTA just less than a year and a half ago? Here, read Pelosi's statement on the House floor on CAFTA. She garnered 217 votes against it, that's more than there were then Democrats in the House. Pelosi has made it very very clear that when she is in charge, agreements like CAFTA will likely not pass. So yes, while we can disagree with her decision here, let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater. Yes, she voted for NAFTA, but she's obviously not an all-out free-trade ga ga.

I think what she should do is schedule a separate seminar altogether on Labor issues. I am going to write her to do exactly that. But she feels that this particular seminar is about fiscal sanity and a balanced budget. Anyone familiar with the terminologies understand that fiscal policy and economic policy, which intertwined, are not one and the same. Fiscal policy focuses on how Congress spends money, interest rates on federal loans, issuance of federal bonds, etc. Economic policy focuses on trade deals, regulations of labor and other markets, minimum wage, tax policy (including reductions and increases in taxes, tax incentives, etc.) and so on.

So yes, write your letters. But please, people, Nancy Pelosi is not an enemy of organized labor.

I, too am not an enemy of organized labor. But if I see people going around sticking shivs in the backs of fellow progressives for no good reason, I'll call 'em on it, labor backers or not.

Nancy Pelosi is not an enemy of organized labor, just a goose-stepping ally of the Israel Lobby.

Care to "call her on it" phoenixwoman?

Care to make a statement on the 8-10 million dollars a day in "aid", Israel receives?

Bueller? Bueller?

What a joke.

It took 6 years to make Americans aware of the neoconservative elements guiding the bush administration.

The good news is, it will take allot less to make Americans aware of the same elements guiding the Democrats.

The only stabbing in the back, is any congress person who lacks the courage to stand up to the lobby, wich would be in the best interest of the American people.

I don't blame Democrats or Republicans who are afraid of the Israeli Lobby, they're more powerful then the mafia. Just ask Jack Abramoff and Larry Franklin.

Good link. Thanks.

Now, I agree with your agenda here, but you seem to be using it to put down the author.

The fact is, Pelosi got a lot more campaign dough from the corporations than from Big Labor.

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act was passed after Enron screwed us, making them more accountable.

Pelosi is being pressured by her big money pals to kill it.

Then all corporations get to screw us even more. The writer is going to do something about that as am I, while you carry on knowledgeable about your thing and completely fucking rude and ignorant about everything else.

"My father was the Mayor of Baltimore. When he was a young man he was a Shabbat Goy. I loved to watch the reaction of Jewish audiences when he spoke to them in Yiddish. [..]Let us be clear, the U.S. and Israel have an unbreakable bond of friendship based on our shared commitment to democracy, human rights, stability, and peace."

She's not being pressured to "kill it", in her own words, she is looking at "revising" it.

Should investors in corporate America be protected? Yes. Is it a political issue that Pelosi has taken up because the coffers are being filled? Yes.

Did the sox act stop enron? No, the market did. What makes you think this law will be enforced, considering the laws already present weren't?

The irony, is that many publicly traded companies have gone private or overseas, wich means small investors, wich the act was supposed to protect, are unable to partake in equity investment.

You trust the sox act that gives unconstitutional authority to the PCAOB, a private non-profit corporation that has the power to enforce federal laws?

It may be a well motivated law, but it seems to me it only entrenches corporate statism, consulting firms have become very profitable.

Caveat-Emptor.

Regardless, the issue on most Americans' minds is Iraq, not sox.

How does increasing war debts, wich will be felt most by "the little guy", help the working class?

How does not impeaching the CEO of USA,Inc. help the working class?

How does telling Americans Iran is a threat to working class Americans, help them?

How does supporting someone who blames the forced slums and ghettoes, wich create high unemployment and hunger, on Palestinians, help anyone?

As a member of the human rights caucus she attacked Amnesty International for their report on the brutality of Israel's re-occupation and supported a resolution increasing military aid to Israel.

Supporting state sponsored terrorism, while misrepresenting former presidents, and publicly speaking "for all democrats" is not my idea of a good strategy for Democrats.

As far as sarbanes-oxley goes, winning a battle and losing the war, is a pretty weak defense to support Pelosi.

A sliver of light, darkened by the monstrous shadow of lies, helps no one.

I'm not against Pelosi, but I'm not going to actively support her. That only legitimizes everything else.

Once anyone accepts the big lie, it's much easier to accept all the little ones.

"Hugo Chavez fancies himself a modern-day Simon Bolivar, but all he is, is an everyday thug." Nancy Pelosi

"Chavez has abused the privilege of speaking at the United Nations." Nancy Pelosi

"The United States will stand with Israel now and forever. Now and forever." Nancy Pelosi

"Saddam Hussein certainly has chemical and biological weapons. There’s no question about that." Nancy Pelosi
