Blood up over war diamonds

A campaign to boycott Israeli "blood diamonds" has been launched by a group established to raise awareness of the international plight of the Palestinian people.

Global Palestinian solidarity, a coalition of Palestinian organizations from around the world, has activated a campaign which is aimed at highlighting the extent of Israeli involvement in the blood diamond business.

Blood diamonds, or conflict diamonds are diamonds mined in a war zone and sold in order to finance war efforts. According to a spokesperson for the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign, IPSC (http://www.ipsc.ie), Israel claims to be the World's top exporter for diamonds.

In 2005, the Israeli gemstone exports were valued at over $16 billion and comprised 30% of total manufacturing exports, explained the spokesperson.

The significance of this figure lay in the Israeli Defense Ministry budget, which was just $12 billion, he added.

The IPSC claims that jewelers are selling Israeli blood diamonds to unsuspecting Irish consumers.

The group will be staging events in Dublin and other cities around the Ireland over the coming days in an effort to encourage people to demand non-Israeli diamonds in the run-up to Valentine's Day.

In a recent letter to Retail Jewelers of Ireland (http://www.rji.ie), the group called on jewelers here to support the consumer's right to information about the country where each diamond was crafted.

The group has also urged Irish jewelers to make laser-inscribed diamonds crafted in Canada available to consumers.

The international boycott of Israeli blood diamonds coincides with the release of the Oscar-nominated movie Blood Diamonds, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which has generated much public discussion on the ethics of supporting the diamond trade.
